Michael R. Caplan

Widely recognized for his innovative and entrepreneurial leadership across the professional services industry, Michael R. Caplan manages Lowenstein’s business, financial and administrative operations with a focus on building strategic partnerships and leveraging technology solutions to drive optimal return on investment through the use of metrics, reports, and trend analysis.

Mike brings over 25 years of experience in the accounting, financial, investment, and consulting businesses and 15 years of corporate legal experience to the role of Lowenstein Sandler’s Chief Operating Officer. He has worked with over 30 general counsels on managing data analytics, technology project implementation, law firm relationship management, and financial management, consistently seeking improved efficiency and effectiveness through intelligent cost reduction, program management, compliance, and risk mitigation.  He also has extensive experience in the development of reporting metrics and dashboards in key areas such as litigation, e-discovery, outside counsel accruals, and alternative fee savings.

Recognized by Financial Times North America as one of the top five Legal Intrapreneurs in the industry, Mike was also selected Legal Innovator of the Year by The Changing Lawyer Awards, and as North American Operations Executive of the Year by the Best in Biz Awards.

In his role at Lowenstein Sandler, Mike champions the integration of technology in legal practices, guiding attorneys in leveraging digital tools to maximize business investment returns through strategic data use, analytical reporting, and trend evaluation. He also collaborates with chief legal officers, CAOs, and CIOs in creating metrics and dashboards, targeting crucial expenditure areas like litigation, e-discovery, external counsel costs, and alternative fee arrangements.

Former COO at global law firm Goodwin Procter, Mike’s experience includes serving as global chief operating officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies’ Corporate Legal, Risk and Compliance Departments, and global director of operations for Goldman Sachs’s Legal Department. Mike also ran his own legal operations consulting business supporting general counsels and corporate legal departments in the areas of technology, project management, data management and operations.

A frequent speaker on the business of law, the use of artificial intelligence, and the evolving legal marketplace, Mike hosts a quarterly legal advisory forum, a platform for industry leaders and general counsels to exchange insights on best practices, technological advancements, and current challenges in legal management for law departments and legal operations executives.
