Lowenstein Sandler has joined global legal education leader BarBri in preparing the next generation of lawyers by sponsoring five diverse students entering their first year of law school in the Law Preview Diversity Scholarship Program. All five students will be attending North Carolina Central, an HBCU law school, in the fall.

“Having experienced what it is like to be a first-year law student with little formal preparation for what it takes to be successful, I fully appreciate how BarBri’s prelaw prep course can help level the playing field for these students, who are often the first generation in their families to continue on to higher education,” says Danielle Carr, Lowenstein’s Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. “With instruction on the Socratic method of classroom instruction as well as the arduous processes of outlining courses and briefing cases, these scholarship recipients will join their first-year law school peers fully equipped to succeed and excel. Lowenstein, through these scholarships and other efforts, is committed to providing the support necessary to increase the pipeline of candidates with the skill sets necessary to secure whatever job they desire in the legal profession.”  The prep course provides over 45 hours of instruction from leading professors and attorneys on studying and test-taking methods, as well as an overview of academic strategies integral to success in law school. In addition, the law students will have the opportunity to foster relationships with scholarship sponsors, which is especially advantageous during 2L recruiting.

Lowenstein was the only participating firm that elected to support students at North Carolina Central. “It’s important for us to establish relationships beyond the top ten law schools, from which we already recruit,” says Carr. “We are making an intentional effort to extend our national reach to students from a wide array of backgrounds in order to increase diversity in both the legal profession and within our own workplace. By investing in diverse law students, we empower them to become leaders in the industry as well as role models for the next generation.”

North Carolina Central School of Law is a nationally ranked leader in legal education, offering an array of clinical courses and opportunities that prepare practice-ready graduates for careers in public service, the private sector, and business.

Applicants for the Law Preview Diversity Scholarship Program must have been accepted and committed to attend law school and be either a member of a racial or ethnic group traditionally underrepresented in law, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a woman, or differently abled.

This year, 644 1L law students representing 103 law schools will benefit from the support offered by 32 law firms. In addition to Lowenstein, other law firm sponsors of the BarBri prep course program include Morrison & Foerster LLP; Denton’s; Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; Baker Botts, L..L.P.; Latham & Watkins LLP; Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP; and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
