Barry T. Albin, former Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court and current partner and chair of Lowenstein Sandler’s Appellate group, as well as member of its Alternative Dispute Resolution and White Collar Criminal Defense practices, will be receiving The Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award from the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey (ACDL-NJ).

Albin has over 40 years of experience in the practice of law as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and civil litigator, including over 20 years of experience as a Justice of the state’s highest court. Called “the consummate jurist” and “a constitutional giant,” he has authored more than 400 opinions, including more than 230 majority opinions, more than 130 dissents, and dozens of concurrences on issues spanning the wide spectrum of the law. He has written on such topics as civil rights, criminal law, insurance, employment discrimination, contracts, taxes, municipal government, elections, products liability, and mass toxic torts.

Albin is the author of landmark opinions on the rights of same-sex couples, the rights of the accused and workers, and civil rights, among others. He also authored a number of dissents, which later became law.

Before his appointment to the high court, Albin practiced in the public and private sectors, trying approximately 60 jury trials and countless non-jury cases and arguing numerous appeals. He began his career as a Deputy Attorney General in the Appellate Section of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, and then served as an Assistant Prosecutor in Passaic and Middlesex Counties before entering private practice and ascending to the bench of New Jersey’s court of last resort.

The Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award is presented annually by the ACDL-NJ to a member of the bar who exemplifies professionalism, dedication to, and passion for the law. This prestigious award honors the memory of Judge Whipple, who was a highly regarded jurist in the Superior Court, Hudson County, from 1963 until 1967, at which time he was appointed to the United States District Court of New Jersey by President Lyndon Johnson.

ACDL-NJ was established in 1985 and has since become the primary organized voice for the criminal defense bar in New Jersey. The ACDL-NJ was formed, among other reasons, to respond to the continuing problems confronting criminal defense lawyers when they honestly, ethically, but zealously represent their clients; to protect and insure compliance with those individual rights guaranteed by the New Jersey and United States Constitutions; and to encourage cooperation among criminal defense lawyers engaged in the furtherance of those objectives. Albin served as the President of ACDL-NJ from 1999 to 2000.

Albin will receive the award during the ACDL-NJ Installation of Officers and Trustees Reception, taking place on Thursday, May 11 at 6:00 pm at the Pleasantdale Chataeu in West Orange, New Jersey.
