Madhumita “Mita” Datta is an intellectual property lawyer focused on providing clients—ranging from startups to established corporations—with sophisticated patent advice and counsel. Her services include U.S. and international patent prosecution, patent portfolio management and counseling, analysis of the patent landscape, and IP transactional and litigation support.

Mita manages emerging portfolios of startups, as well as large patent portfolios of domestic and international cases for institutional clients. She is valued for her ability to expedite patent prosecutions by leveraging the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) fast-tracking provisions and special pilot programs. Mita also advises on intellectual property issues within the context of corporate mergers and acquisitions, as well as in litigation and other disputes.

With an extensive technical background in electrical and computer engineering, Mita drafts and prosecutes original patent applications and provides other patent-related services on a broad array of technological products and services, such as complex microelectronic and optoelectronic devices and circuits, semiconductor equipment and manufacturing processes, AI (artificial intelligence) and ML (machine learning) for the semiconductor industry, work automation and autonomous vehicles, thin film batteries, renewable energy solutions, high-speed networks, simulation and software tools, biosensors, tracking and navigation devices, blockchain technology, social networking platforms, and e-commerce.

The recipient of a National Science Foundation research grant, Mita has a patent on optoelectronic device integration and packaging technology, which was later transferred to the NSA’s Microelectronics Research Laboratory. She has authored numerous legal and scientific articles and frequently presents at academic and legal industry conferences. She currently serves on the High-Tech Law Advisory Board for Santa Clara University.

Active in the firm’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives, Mita is also a founding member of Lowenstein’s Employee Resource Group focused on Chronic Conditions and Support (CCS). She mentors current and aspiring law students and junior professionals through formal DEI platforms like Leadership Council for Legal Diversity (LCLD) and Advancing Diversity Across Patent Teams (ADAPT).

Mita is an active participant in various patent-focused pro bono initiatives based in California, New York, and Utah. She has also taught IP basics to underprivileged high school students through the All Stars Project.

She is fluent in Bengali, English, and Hindi.
