New York, NY - October 27, 2016 – As one of the most dramatic presidential elections in American history draws to a close, national law firm Lowenstein Sandler is pleased to announce that it will again manage one of several national voter hotline centers on Monday, November 7, and Tuesday, November 8, in an effort to ensure that all eligible voters can participate in the political process.

Volunteers from the firm will respond to calls and provide assistance to citizens of New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Kansas who encounter obstacles to casting ballots. Lowenstein Sandler is a strong believer and active participant in the Election Protection effort, the nation's largest nonpartisan voter protection coalition, led by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

The Election Protection toll-free hotlines – 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683) in English; 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA (1-888-839-8682) in Spanish; and 1-888-API-VOTE (1-888-274-8683) in several Asian languages – are available to any voter who needs guidance in understanding his or her rights. Voter information can also be found on the Election Protection site: www.866ourvote.org.

This is the second presidential election in which Lowenstein will provide assistance. In 2012, Lowenstein's call center answered more than 7,000 calls from residents of New Jersey, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Many calls dealt with polling-day issues from New Jersey residents following the chaos caused by Hurricane Sandy, which hit just days before that election.

"Our lawyers are excited to participate once again in Election Protection, helping to ensure that citizens understand and exercise their voting rights," said Catherine Weiss, Lowenstein Partner and Chair of the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest. "I'll never forget receiving a call four years ago from the supervisor in charge of dispatching 10,000 first responders, who were busy rebuilding the state's battered infrastructure in the days after Sandy. We helped about 2,000 emergency workers vote locally and connected the other 8,000, who had arrived from all over the country, with Election Protection's national command center to help them figure out whether and how they could vote remotely.

"This year, we're proud to help the eligible citizens of New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Kansas understand their rights and cast ballots that count."

Lowenstein Sandler has a long history of working to advance voting rights. In addition to its work in presidential elections, Lowenstein served as Election Protection's command center during the 2013 New Jersey senatorial and gubernatorial elections. Lowenstein also represented college students in Dutchess County, New York, in 2012, whose voter registration applications had been wrongly rejected. Lowenstein attorneys prepared a federal lawsuit, conducted an evidentiary hearing featuring one of the students, and won a preliminary injunction allowing the students to vote on Election Day.

In 2013, the firm filed a friend-of-the-court brief in Arizona v. Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona on behalf of 28 prominent Latino and Asian-American organizations. The firm argued that Arizona's Proposition 200 – which required documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration beyond the demands of federal law – placed unique burdens on naturalized citizens to present in person their original certificates of naturalization. The Supreme Court held that the National Voter Registration Act preempted Proposition 200.
